The Mississippi river is a mighty force of nature.  The early days of the river was based around river boats.  Those boats included many musical acts over the years needing service work on their instruments.  Enter Peg Meyer.

The History of Shivelbine Music: A Legacy of Community and Melody

For over a century, Shivelbine Music has been a cornerstone of the music scene in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Known for its strong community presence, dedication to musicians, and enduring family legacy, the store’s history is intertwined with notable figures such as Peg Meyer, William L. Shivelbine, and Leland J. Shivelbine. Each of these individuals has contributed uniquely to the store’s growth, musical influence, and lasting legacy.

The Beginnings: Peg Meyer and the Local Jazz Scene

The story of Shivelbine Music traces back to Cape Girardeau’s jazz scene in the early 20th century, where legendary musician Peg Meyer was making waves. A multi-talented performer, Meyer was a significant figure in the jazz world and Cape Girardeau’s cultural life. Known primarily for his saxophone skills, Meyer was deeply embedded in the local music community and co-founded the Melody Kings one of the earliest jazz bands in Southeast Missouri. The Melody Kings performed at dances, gatherings, and live events across the Midwest, popularizing jazz and helping to cement it as a significant cultural movement.

Through his passion for music and his connection with the local community, Meyer formed a close bond with the Shivelbine family, who would go on to become pillars of the local music industry. This friendship inspired the Shivelbines’ early commitment to bringing high-quality instruments and music education to Southeast Missouri.

Founding Shivelbine Music

The Shivelbine family officially established Shivelbine Music in 1949 when the two brother Bill and Freck purchased all interests in Peg and their father’s business. Recognizing a growing demand for musical instruments and a space where aspiring musicians could find resources and guidance, the Shivelbines wanted to create a hub for the local music scene. The store began as a small, intimate shop offering musical instruments, accessories, and repair services for local musicians.  Peg stayed on as a lead repair tech all the way into the 80’s.

As jazz, blues, and rock music surged in popularity, Shivelbine Music expanded its inventory to cater to all types of musicians. From beginners to seasoned players, the store became the go-to place for anyone interested in picking up a new instrument or refining their musical skills. Over time, it became more than a store; it became a space where musicians could meet, share, and celebrate their love of music.

The Legacy of Shivelbine Music

Shivelbine Music has played an essential role in shaping the music culture of Cape Girardeau and the surrounding areas for over 70 years. The influence of Peg Meyer, Bill Shivelbine, and L.J. Shivelbine has helped shape a strong and vibrant music community that thrives on tradition, education, and innovation. The store has seen generations of musicians walk through its doors, from those seeking their first instruments to seasoned professionals looking for quality gear and support.
